Who Pays for a Medical Helicopter and Hospital Bills After a Crash in Millsboro, DE?

After a crash this serious, the first bills often arrive before anyone knows who caused it: the ambulance or helicopter transport, the trauma team, and the hospital stay.

In Delaware, those costs may first be processed through Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage, which every Delaware auto policy must carry and which pays regardless of who was at fault. The statutory minimum is $15,000 for any one person and $30,000 for all persons injured in one accident. Air transport and trauma care can use up a minimum policy quickly. Our guide to how PIP works after a Delaware car accident explains what it covers and how deductibles can shrink it.

Once PIP limits are reached, remaining medical balances may be submitted to private health insurance or pursued through the at-fault driver’s bodily injury liability coverage, depending on the circumstances. If the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage may also apply.

These coverage layers can overlap in ways that are hard to sort out while someone is still recovering. A car accident lawyer can help identify which policies apply and in what order.
