January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and the I-95 corridor in Delaware is a perfect place to keep your eyes open. The following are some things to look for:
- Watch for the Human Trafficking Hand Signal: Palm to window, Tuck the thumb and trap it by, Placing Four Fingers Overtop, Closing the fist.
- At restaurants or rest areas, the person is with a controlling partner or “sponsor” who monitors their movements or will not allow them to speak with anyone alone.
- The person discloses that they are reluctant to engage in sex for money, but is being pressured into it.
- The person wants to stop participating in sex for money but is scared or unable to leave.
- The person seemingly lives where he/she/they work or is transported by guards to the workplace.
If you suspect a person is being trafficked, do not attempt to speak with them directly. This may cause the person more danger. Instead, contact the police immediately, identifying as many details about the person potentially being trafficked, the vehicle they are traveling in, a description of the person or people they are with. Your intervention may change, or even save, a life.
