Bicyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run on Woodpecker Rd in Seaford, DE

Seaford, DE (July 25, 2026) – A 73-year-old bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Woodpecker Rd west of Butler Branch Rd in Seaford on Friday afternoon, July 24, according to Delaware State Police.

Troopers said the crash occurred at approximately 2:10 p.m. while the Seaford man was riding his bicycle eastbound along the south edge of the roadway. An unknown vehicle traveling in the same direction struck the bicyclist and fled the scene. The victim died at the scene from his injuries.

Investigators believe the suspect vehicle may have passenger-side damage, possibly near the turn signal housing. The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the fatal crash.

Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the bicyclist who lost his life.

What Happens If the Driver Is Never Found After a Delaware Hit-and-Run?

A hit-and-run investigation does not necessarily end if the driver is not immediately identified. In Delaware, law enforcement may continue gathering evidence while families and injured victims explore available insurance coverage and other legal options that could apply to the circumstances of the crash.

Investigators often review physical evidence from the scene, surveillance footage, witness statements, and vehicle debris to help identify the driver.

At the same time, insurance policies may be examined to determine whether uninsured motorist or other applicable coverage could help address certain losses, depending on the facts of the case and the policy involved.

When a fatal hit-and-run occurs, surviving family members may also need to preserve important records, including funeral expenses, medical documentation, insurance correspondence, and other financial information.

Maintaining organized documentation can be helpful while the investigation remains active and any insurance or legal matters are being evaluated.

A wrongful death attorney can explain how Delaware law may apply when the at-fault driver has not yet been located, review potential sources of insurance coverage, and discuss the legal options available based on the known facts.

Legal guidance may also assist with preserving evidence, communicating with insurance companies, and monitoring developments as the investigation progresses.
