Firefighters Hurt Battling Four-Alarm Fire in Wilmington, DE

Wilmington, DE (July 3, 2026) – Two firefighters were hurt Thursday, July 2, while battling a four-alarm fire that damaged four rowhomes in the 1500 block of Clayton Road.

Wilmington Fire Crews fought the blaze as temperatures reached triple digits, a challenge fire officials said contributed to escalating the response to four alarms. Flames broke through the roof of at least one home while firefighters worked from above.

Everyone inside the affected homes made it out safely, and no rescues were needed. Fire officials say three of the four rowhomes are likely a total loss.

The two injured firefighters suffered minor injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

We hope both firefighters have a quick and full recovery.

Legal Options for Injured Firefighters in Wilmington, DEFirefighters Hurt Battling Four-Alarm Fire

When a firefighter is hurt on the job, most claims for medical treatment and lost wages fall under Delaware’s workers’ compensation system, which generally provides coverage without requiring proof that anyone was negligent.

Firefighters battling extreme heat conditions face heightened risks of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heat stroke on top of typical fire-related injuries like burns or smoke inhalation. Working a four-alarm fire in triple-digit heat adds physical strain that can compound even minor injuries sustained during the response.

In some situations, a firefighter’s injury may involve a third party outside the standard workers’ compensation system, such as a property owner’s code violation or a defective piece of equipment that failed during the response. A personal injury lawyer can help evaluate whether a separate claim might apply in addition to standard workers’ compensation benefits.

Firefighters put themselves at risk every time they respond to a large-scale fire, and extreme heat only adds to that danger. At Murphy & Landon, we can help sort out whether a separate claim applies beyond workers’ compensation. Understanding where workers’ comp ends and a third-party claim begins isn’t always straightforward.
