Seaford, DE (December 4, 2025) – A deadly pedestrian crash occurred on Tuesday, December 2, along Sussex Hwy just south of Brickyard Rd. The collision happened around 10:10 p.m., according to early reports from Delaware State Police.
Troopers say a Toyota 4Runner was heading south in the right lane of Sussex Hwy when a pedestrian attempted to cross the road from the center median. The man entered the path of the Toyota. The SUV hit the pedestrian in the right lane. Investigators later learned that the pedestrian’s car had run out of gas on the northbound median, and he was trying to cross the highway.
The pedestrian, 66-year-old Bret Jewell of Seaford, died at the scene. Officials withheld his name until his family received notice. The 18-year-old driver from Laurel was not hurt.
Police shut down the southbound side of Sussex Hwy for about three hours while they examined the scene and cleared the area. The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to look into the crash. We send our heartfelt thoughts to those affected and hope for comfort during this difficult time.

An experienced attorney can examine the crash details, gather evidence, speak with witnesses, and work to protect the victim’s rights. Every case is different, but skilled legal help can make the process clearer and less overwhelming for grieving families.
Pedestrian safety continues to be a statewide priority, and officials encourage both drivers and walkers to stay alert. Drivers should reduce speed in low-visibility areas and always watch for people on or near the road.
