Car Accidents in Delaware
Car accidents continue to be a major public safety concern across Delaware. According to recent state reports, there were over 30,000 crashes in 2023 alone. These incidents led to thousands of injuries and hundreds of fatalities statewide. Intersections, particularly high-traffic zones like Route 40 and Route 72, remain frequent locations for serious collisions due to speeding, distracted driving, and congestion.
When it comes to understanding how crash victims are affected, here are some common reasons why accidents happen on Delaware roads:
- Distracted Driving: Phone use, GPS systems, and even conversations with passengers can pull a driver’s attention away from the road. Just a few seconds of distraction can result in a serious or even fatal crash. This behavior is one of the leading causes of accidents both statewide and nationwide.
- Failure to Yield: Many intersection crashes occur because one driver fails to yield the right-of-way. Misjudging the speed of oncoming traffic or ignoring signs and signals can lead to T-bone or rear-end accidents that result in serious injuries.
- Impaired Driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is still a major problem in Delaware. Impairment reduces reaction time and affects judgment, significantly increasing the risk of causing a crash.
- Speeding: Exceeding posted speed limits or driving too fast for conditions contributes to more severe impacts during collisions. High speeds make it harder to avoid hazards and increase the likelihood of life-threatening injuries.
- Poor Weather Conditions: Rain, fog, and snow can all reduce visibility and road traction. Drivers who don’t adjust their speed or following distance to account for weather can easily lose control and cause accidents.
