Newark, DE – Pedestrian on Scooter Hit at S College Ave & E Delaware Ave

Newark, DE - Pedestrian on Scooter Hit at S College Ave & E Delaware Ave

Newark, DE (May 20, 2025) – An early morning crash involving a pedestrian on a scooter caused brief traffic delays and led to a hospital transport in Newark.

Around 8:16 a.m. on May 19, emergency crews were dispatched to the intersection of South College Avenue and East Delaware Avenue following reports of a pedestrian being struck. Witnesses at the scene described the individual as a male riding a Razor-style scooter who was hit while attempting to cross the street.

Newark Police and EMS responded immediately and shut down the intersection for approximately 10 minutes while they tended to the victim and cleared the area. The injured pedestrian was transported to Christiana Hospital for medical evaluation. Authorities have not yet released details about the severity of the injuries or whether any citations have been issued in connection with the crash. Investigators are continuing to look into the circumstances that led up to the collision.

We hope the injured individual in this accident makes a full and quick recovery.

Pedestrian Accidents in Delaware

Newark, DE - Pedestrian on Scooter Hit at S College Ave & E Delaware AveIn Delaware, pedestrian accidents continue to be a serious concern, particularly in urban areas and busy intersections. According to the Delaware Department of Transportation, more than 400 pedestrian-related crashes occurred in the state in 2023, many of them resulting in injuries or deaths. Distracted driving, failure to yield, and poor visibility are among the leading causes. Even cautious pedestrians are at risk when drivers fail to adhere to traffic laws or overlook those crossing on foot or using devices like scooters.

Pedestrian safety is critical, and accidents like this one bring attention to key factors every family should understand:

  • Scooter Riders Face Unique Dangers: Scooters offer little protection in a crash. Riders are more vulnerable to injuries due to limited visibility and the fact that most motorists do not anticipate encountering small scooters in busy intersections. Even when riders follow traffic rules, they can be difficult to spot, especially during morning commutes.
  • Urban Intersection Hazards: Intersections in cities like Newark are often crowded, making them hotspots for collisions. Multiple lanes of traffic, turning vehicles, and pedestrians crossing at the same time can create confusion. When right-of-way rules are ignored, the risk increases for pedestrians and scooter riders alike.
  • Quick Road Closures Aren’t Always Enough: While police often act quickly to secure scenes and prevent secondary accidents, a short road closure doesn’t undo the injuries already suffered. Fast response helps, but thorough investigations are needed to determine liability and prevent similar accidents in the future.
  • Injuries Without Immediate Symptoms: It’s common for pedestrian accident victims to feel “okay” at first but later discover hidden injuries. Internal trauma, head injuries, or joint damage may not become apparent until hours or days later, making hospital evaluations essential even for those who seem unhurt.

If you or someone close to you was hurt in a Newark pedestrian accident, speaking with a local pedestrian accident attorney can be one of the most important steps to take. An attorney can investigate what happened, protect your rights, and help pursue fair compensation. Whether a vehicle failed to yield or a scooter was overlooked, the law offers options for victims to seek justice.
