Seaford, DE – Two People Hospitalized After Crash on Rt 13 & Airport Rd

Seaford, DE (November 11, 2024) – An injury car crash occurred early this morning near Seaford, sending two individuals to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Delaware State Police reported that the incident took place just after 5:30 a.m. at the intersection of Route 13 (Rte 13) and Airport Rd, just south of Seaford.

According to authorities, a pickup truck had stopped at a stop sign on Airport Rd but then pulled out into the path of a southbound Jetta traveling on Rte 13. The Jetta struck the driver’s side of the pickup truck, which was carrying tanks filled with diesel fuel and gasoline. Though the tanks were secured, the crash caused them to rupture, prompting a hazardous materials (hazmat) response from the Millsboro Fire Company and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC).

Emergency responders arrived at the scene quickly and transported both drivers, who are both from Seaford to an area hospital. Fortunately, neither sustained life-threatening injuries, though both required medical attention. The 60-year-old driver of the pickup was cited for failing to remain stopped at the stop sign.

Authorities closed Rte 13 for about three hours while crews worked to clear the wreckage and contain the fuel spill. The Millsboro Fire Company Hazmat unit, along with DNREC, worked diligently to prevent further environmental damage.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those involved in today’s accident. While the injuries sustained were thankfully not life-threatening, we extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those affected by this incident.

Injury Car Accidents in Seaford: A Growing Concern

Seaford, like many small towns, has seen a rise in traffic accidents in recent years, particularly at intersections and on high-traffic roads like Route 13. In 2023, Sussex County reported over 2,200 accidents, with nearly 500 resulting in injuries. Although not all occurred within Seaford, the area has become a hotspot for traffic incidents. This highlights the need for safe driving practices and public awareness campaigns to prevent accidents.

The impact of these accidents is significant, affecting victims and the community. Injuries range from minor to severe, often leading to long-term medical care, lost income, and emotional distress. Negligent driving behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, and failure to yield are major contributors. Additionally, accidents involving hazardous materials, like the recent crash, can complicate cleanup efforts and pose extra risks.

If you’ve been injured in an accident that wasn’t your fault, you may have grounds for a personal injury claim. Key factors include the other driver’s negligence and whether your injuries resulted in significant medical costs or emotional suffering. A personal injury attorney can help you understand your rights and the potential compensation you may be entitled to, which may include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and in some cases, punitive damages.
