Middletown, DE (August 10, 2024) – A fatal crash occurred on Saturday afternoon, August 9, in Middletown, resulting in the death of an 83-year-old Wilmington man. The incident, reported by the Delaware State Police, took place at approximately 3:00 p.m. at the intersection of Summit Bridge Road and Red Lion Road.
According to the Delaware State Police, a Ford Explorer driven by a 25-year-old man from St. Louis, MO, was traveling north in the right lane when a Ford Edge, driven by a 66-year-old man, attempted to make a left turn onto Red Lion Road, directly into the path of the Explorer. The collision impacted the passenger side of the Edge.
The 83-year-old passenger in the Edge, whose name is withheld pending family notification, was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. Another passenger in the Edge, a 61-year-old woman, sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized. The remaining two passengers, a 79-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Edge was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The Explorer’s driver and a 29-year-old passenger were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Emergency responders, including fire services, were on the scene to manage the situation and assist with vehicle extrication. The road was closed for approximately five hours for the investigation and to clear debris. The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
