Left Turn Causes Scooter Crash on Streamside Cir in Smyrna, DE

Smyrna, DE (July 31, 2026) – A 15-year-old boy was hurt Thursday night, July 30, after his electric scooter was struck by a car making a left turn on Streamside Circle.

Smyrna Police said a Toyota Camry was traveling north on Streamside Circle within the Christina Apartments development around 9:21 p.m. The teen was riding his scooter south on the same road at the time.

Investigators determined the scooter continued through the intersection and collided head-on with the Camry as the driver turned left back onto Streamside Circle. The boy, a Smyrna resident, was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver, a 23-year-old Smyrna woman, was not hurt.

The investigation into the wreck remains active.

We hope the teen has a smooth and full recovery.

Electric scooters have become a common sight in residential communities like the Christina Apartments off Streamside Circle, but their smaller size can make them harder for drivers to spot, especially at night.

Riders involved in head-on collisions with vehicles can face serious outcomes, including head trauma, broken bones, and road rash. Younger riders may also require extended hospital stays, physical therapy, or ongoing monitoring for injuries that are not immediately obvious.

Delaware law classifies electric scooters differently depending on their speed and design, and riders are generally expected to follow many of the same rules of the road as bicyclists, including riding with the flow of traffic and yielding at intersections.

Because scooters are not required to carry the same visibility equipment as cars, questions about right-of-way and fault usually come up after a crash, particularly when a turning vehicle is involved.

A personal injury lawyer can help a family understand what happened during a left-turn collision and how fault may be determined under Delaware traffic law. An attorney can also help clarify what types of compensation may be available for medical expenses and other losses tied to the crash.
