Smyrna, DE (May 18, 2026) – An 8-year-old boy was injured after being struck by a dirt bike at Sunnyside Park in Smyrna. Emergency units responded to the park at approximately 4:00 p.m. on May 15 following reports of a child being hit.
Authorities said the child was playing on basketball courts when a dirt bike operated by a 15-year-old rider entered the area and struck him. Police reported that the rider left the scene without stopping or reporting the incident.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
We extend our thoughts to the injured child and wish him a full recovery.
What Options Do Families Have After a Child Is Injured in a Vehicle Accident in Delaware?
When a child is injured in a vehicle-related accident in Delaware, families often need time to understand what options may be available for medical care, insurance coverage, and potential legal claims. These cases can involve cars, off-road vehicles, bicycles, or other motorized equipment, and each situation is reviewed based on how the injury occurred and who may have been responsible.
One of the first steps families typically take is reviewing insurance coverage that may apply to the incident. Depending on the circumstances, coverage could come from an auto insurance policy, homeowners’ insurance, or a policy tied to a recreational vehicle. Because minors are involved, insurance companies often require detailed documentation, including medical records, incident reports, and statements from witnesses or responding authorities.
Delaware cases involving injured children may also involve claims for medical expenses, ongoing treatment, rehabilitation, and other costs connected to recovery. In more serious situations, families may need to account for long-term care needs or follow-up evaluations to monitor the child’s condition over time. Keeping organized records of hospital visits, prescriptions, and related expenses can help support any insurance or legal process.
Liability in these cases can depend on several factors, including whether a driver acted negligently, whether safety rules were followed, and whether a vehicle was being used lawfully. When a minor is involved, additional legal considerations may apply, and claims are often handled through a parent or guardian acting on the child’s behalf.
Lastly, Delaware follows a fault-based insurance system, meaning responsibility for the injury can affect how compensation is determined. Because multiple parties or insurance policies may be involved, the review process can take time while investigators evaluate all available evidence.
If someone you love was hurt in a crash, speaking with a personal injury lawyer can help you understand your legal rights. A lawyer can assist with gathering evidence, communicating with insurance companies, and ensuring all deadlines are met.
