Dover, DE (May 15, 2026) – A bicycle rider suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries after a northbound SUV struck him at the intersection of Route 13 and Bath Street in front of the Golden Eagle Diner on Thursday night, May 14. The crash happened at approximately 9:00 p.m.
The bicycle rider was crossing Route 13 toward the borough when the SUV hit him. Damage to the SUV appeared around the headlight assembly area, and the bicycle came to rest in the parking lot in front of the diner. Dover Police did not close Route 13 but took up one northbound lane to conduct the investigation.
Investigators are currently looking into who had the green light at the time of the crash. The identities of the rider and the SUV driver have not been released. The accident remains under active investigation.
Our thoughts go out to the injured bicycle rider as he receives care and works toward a full recovery.
The Importance of Medical Checks After a Bicycle Accident in Delaware
Getting a medical check after a bicycle accident in Delaware is one of the most critical steps an injured rider can take even when injuries appear manageable at first. A bicycle crash can generate significant physical trauma even at relatively low vehicle speeds. The human body absorbs impact differently on a bicycle than inside a vehicle, and injuries that seem minor at the scene can turn serious within hours.
Bicycle riders struck by vehicles commonly experience head injuries, spinal trauma, broken bones, and soft tissue damage. Even when a rider feels alert and mobile after a crash, a medical evaluation helps identify injuries that are not immediately obvious. Concussions, internal bleeding, and nerve damage often produce delayed symptoms.
Visiting an emergency room, urgent care center, or primary care physician as soon as possible after a crash creates a medical record that directly ties your injuries to the accident. That record becomes essential if you later file an insurance claim or pursue legal action.
Medical documentation also plays a central role in any personal injury claim. Insurance companies look closely at the timeline between a crash and the first medical visit. A gap in that timeline gives adjusters room to argue that injuries were not caused by the accident or were not as serious as claimed. Seeking treatment promptly closes that gap and strengthens your position from the start.
Delaware follows a modified comparative fault standard, meaning that if an injured person shares some responsibility for the crash their compensation may be reduced proportionally.
A personal injury attorney familiar with Delaware bicycle accident cases can review the crash report, gather witness statements, and help build a clear timeline of events and injuries. Early legal guidance also helps protect against quick settlement offers from insurance companies that may not reflect the full extent of long-term medical needs.
