Newark, DE (April 3, 2026) – One man died and another suffered critical injuries in a head-on crash on Wednesday, April 1, along southbound Route 896 just north of Old Baltimore Pike. Emergency units responded shortly before 7:00 p.m. after reports of a serious multi-vehicle collision.
Delaware State Police said a northbound SUV crossed the center median and entered the southbound lanes. The SUV then struck a pickup truck head-on, causing a third vehicle to become involved in the crash.
A responding officer arrived and found the SUV driver trapped inside the vehicle and in cardiac arrest. Emergency responders worked to remove the driver from the wreckage and began treatment at the scene.
Paramedics transported the 45-year-old man from Newark to Christiana Hospital, where he later died. The 42-year-old driver of the pickup truck, also from Newark, suffered critical injuries and received emergency medical care.
Officials confirmed that the driver of the third vehicle was not hurt in the collision. Investigators remained at the scene for several hours to examine the crash and gather evidence.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the man who lost his life and keep the injured driver in our thoughts as he receives care.
What Evidence To Collect After a Serious Crash in Delaware
After a serious crash in Delaware, it is important to collect key evidence such as photos, contact details, and official reports. This information helps document what happened and can support insurance claims or further review. In severe accidents, evidence can play a critical role in understanding how the crash occurred.
Photos from the scene can show vehicle positions, damage, and road conditions at the time of the accident. People may also gather names, phone numbers, and insurance information from those involved. If witnesses are present, their statements can provide additional insight into how the collision unfolded.
Serious crashes often lead to major injuries that require immediate and ongoing medical care. Medical records, hospital reports, and treatment notes help connect injuries to the crash. These documents can also show how recovery progresses over time.
A car accident lawyer can review all collected evidence, including reports, photos, and medical records. This process may help explain what options are available and how claims may work based on the details of the accident.
