Wilmington, DE – Serious Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-95 NB Near Naamans Rd Off-Ramp

Wilmington, DE (January 25, 2026) – Emergency crews responded early Thursday morning, January 24, to a serious motor vehicle crash on Interstate 95 northbound in Wilmington that involved multiple patients and required a coordinated rescue response, including extrication efforts and advanced medical transport.

The incident was reported at approximately 5:18 a.m. on I-95 northbound in the area of the Naamans Road off-ramp. Initial information from the scene indicated the collision involved multiple vehicles and resulted in several occupants becoming trapped inside their vehicles. Due to the severity of the crash and the number of patients involved, a large emergency response was dispatched.

Crews from the Claymont Fire Company, Brandywine Hundred Fire Company No. 1, and the Lower Chichester Volunteer Fire Company responded to assist with rescue operations. New Castle County paramedics also arrived to provide medical care. The Delaware State Police Aviation Section and the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) responded as well to assist with incident management and roadway safety.

Command personnel reported that three patients were trapped, including pediatric patients. Multiple ground Advanced Life Support (ALS) units were requested to support treatment and transport efforts. Emergency responders worked to access the vehicles and remove the trapped individuals in a controlled manner while providing medical care during the extrication process.

An update provided at approximately 5:57 a.m. confirmed that extrication efforts had been completed. Following removal from the vehicles, two patients were transported by ground ALS units for further medical evaluation and treatment. A third patient was transported by air to a medical facility for additional care.

At this time, authorities have not released further information regarding the extent of injuries, the identities of those involved, or the contributing factors in the crash.

We extend our best wishes to all those injured and hope for a swift and complete recovery.

What are the top 3 causes of accidents in Delaware?

The top three causes of motor vehicle accidents are distracted driving, speeding, and impaired driving. These factors continue to contribute to a significant portion of crashes across the country, including serious highway collisions that require emergency rescue operations. When a crash occurs at higher speeds or involves multiple vehicles, the potential for severe injury increases substantially, particularly when occupants become trapped and require extrication.Serious Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-95 NB Near Naamans Rd Off-Ramp

Distracted driving is one of the most frequent causes of accidents because it reduces a driver’s ability to recognize hazards in time to respond appropriately. Distractions can include texting, phone calls, using navigation systems, adjusting controls, or diverting attention away from the roadway. Even momentary inattention may lead to a collision, especially on interstate highways where traffic conditions can change rapidly.

Speeding is another major contributor to serious crashes. Driving at excessive speeds or traveling too fast for road conditions reduces reaction time and increases stopping distance. Speed also affects the severity of impact, often resulting in greater vehicle damage and a higher risk of traumatic injuries. Speed-related crashes frequently involve rollovers, multi-vehicle collisions, and injuries that require hospital care or advanced transport.

Impaired driving, including impairment caused by alcohol, drugs, or fatigue, remains a critical safety concern. Impairment can delay reaction time, reduce judgment, and limit the ability to stay within a lane or recognize developing dangers. Early morning hours can present additional risks due to fatigue-related impairment, reduced visibility, and decreased driver alertness.

In serious crashes, common injuries include traumatic brain injuries, spinal trauma, internal injuries, broken bones, and significant soft tissue damage. Victims may require emergency treatment, surgical intervention, and lengthy rehabilitation. Injuries involving children may raise additional concerns due to the vulnerability of younger occupants and the specialized care often needed during recovery.

When an accident is caused by negligence, injured individuals may have legal options to pursue compensation through a personal injury claim. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, rehabilitation costs, and future medical needs. In incidents involving multiple vehicles and extensive injuries, a thorough investigation is often necessary to determine liability and identify all potential sources of insurance coverage.

A car accident lawyer can assist by investigating the collision, reviewing crash reports, gathering documentation, and communicating with insurance companies on behalf of the injured party. Legal support may be particularly important when an accident involves multiple vehicles, disputed fault, or serious injuries that require long-term treatment.
