Selbyville, DE (July 8, 2025) – A tragic two-car crash on Tuesday, July 8, claimed the lives of two people and left another critically hurt, according to Delaware State Police.
The deadly collision happened around 7:55 a.m. on Route 54 near New Road, just east of Selbyville. Authorities say a 22-year-old woman from Berlin, MD, was driving a Chevrolet Camaro eastbound when, for unknown reasons, she crossed the double-yellow centerline.
As she veered into the westbound lane, the Camaro struck a Hyundai Santa Fe head-on.
The woman driving the Camaro was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries. A passenger in the Hyundai—a 77-year-old man from Waynesboro, PA—was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hyundai’s driver, a 74-year-old man from Selbyville, was also hospitalized with critical injuries.
The identities of those involved have not been released. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the Camaro to cross the centerline. No charges have been announced at this time.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of those killed and hope for the full recovery of the injured driver.
Fatal Car Accidents in Delaware
Delaware, though small in size, experiences a troubling number of fatal car accidents each year. Rural areas near towns like Selbyville often see serious collisions, especially on two-lane roads like Rte 54. These types of roads can be especially dangerous due to limited visibility, narrow lanes, and the lack of median barriers.
According to the Delaware Office of Highway Safety, driver error remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes. Speeding, distractions, and failure to stay in the proper lane all contribute to these deadly outcomes. In this recent Selbyville crash, the initial reports suggest the driver crossed the centerline, which is a frequent factor in head-on collisions.
For families impacted by fatal accidents, the pain is deep and long-lasting. A wrongful death lawyer can help grieving families pursue justice through a civil claim. These claims may help cover medical expenses, funeral costs, and the emotional toll caused by sudden loss. In cases involving serious injury, a Delaware personal injury lawyer can also help victims recover damages for pain, suffering, lost income, and long-term medical care.
While no amount of money can undo the harm, holding responsible parties accountable can bring closure. It can also push for safer roadways by highlighting the need for better signage, road maintenance, or driver awareness campaigns.
