Milton, DE (June 9, 2025) – A deadly crash involving a Sussex County EMS vehicle occurred Friday, June 6, around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 16 and Mulberry Street in Milton, resulting in the death of a 74-year-old woman.
According to Delaware State Police, the crash unfolded when a Ford Bronco was heading northbound on Mulberry Street and entered the intersection with Route 16. At the same time, a fully marked EMS Suburban with emergency lights activated was traveling westbound on Route 16. Authorities say the Bronco passed through the stop sign directly into the path of the EMS vehicle.
The EMS Suburban struck the Bronco on the passenger side, causing it to spin off the road and crash into a tree. Emergency personnel arrived quickly and transported the Bronco’s driver, Mary O’Bier of Ellendale, to a nearby hospital. Sadly, she did not survive her injuries.
The Sussex County paramedic who was driving the EMS Suburban sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to a local hospital for treatment. Traffic in the area was backed up in both directions as Milton police and emergency crews worked the scene. The Milton Police Department issued a Facebook advisory at approximately 7:00 p.m. urging caution around the area. The Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident.
We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Mary O’Bier and wish the injured paramedic a full and speedy recovery.
Car Accidents in Delaware
Car crashes remain a serious concern across the state of Delaware. According to recent data, thousands of injury-related crashes take place each year on Delaware roadways, with many involving failure to yield, distracted driving, or impaired driving. These accidents can leave victims and families facing significant challenges, both emotionally and financially.
Understanding some of the common injuries that result from car crashes can help victims know what to expect in the days and weeks following an accident:
- Whiplash and Soft Tissue Injuries: These are among the most common injuries in car accidents. Whiplash occurs when the neck moves abruptly back and forth, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. Though not life-threatening, the discomfort can persist for weeks or months.
- Fractures and Broken Bones: The force of a collision can easily lead to broken ribs, arms, legs, or hips. These injuries often require surgery, extended recovery periods, and physical therapy to regain full strength and mobility.
- Head Injuries and Concussions: Even minor crashes can lead to head trauma. A concussion can disrupt memory, concentration, and balance. In more severe cases, traumatic brain injuries may occur, sometimes requiring lifelong care or rehabilitation.
- Internal Injuries: Organs like the lungs, liver, or spleen can be damaged during high-impact collisions. These injuries might not be visible immediately but can become critical without timely treatment.
- Emotional and Psychological Impact: Car crashes can trigger anxiety, depression, and PTSD in victims and their loved ones. Mental health care is often necessary, especially when accidents involve fatalities or severe trauma.
