New Castle, DE (May 26, 2025) – A 59-year-old man suffered serious injuries following a motorcycle accident on Monday afternoon that unfolded on the Roth Bridge.
The crash happened around 3:34 p.m. on May 26 along Route 1 northbound. According to initial reports, the rider was forced to lay his bike down to avoid another vehicle, only to be struck by an oncoming tractor trailer. The impact left the rider with severe trauma, prompting an urgent multi-agency response.
Emergency crews from the Delaware City, Port Penn, and Christiana Fire Companies responded to the scene, along with New Castle County Paramedics and the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit. First responders confirmed that a motorcycle was involved and immediately began administering aid.
The injured man was already receiving care from Port Penn Fire Company EMTs when paramedics arrived. He had sustained significant chest and lower-body injuries, and there were concerns about internal trauma. Due to the seriousness of his condition, the man was airlifted to Christiana Hospital in Newark via Delaware State Police Aviation’s Trooper 4 helicopter. At the time of transport, he was listed in serious condition. The Delaware State Police is actively investigating the crash to determine what led to the collision.
We hope the man hurt in this crash is able to recover fully and quickly.
Motorcycle Accidents in Delaware
Motorcycle-related collisions are one of the leading causes of traumatic injuries across Delaware. Despite making up a small portion of vehicles on the road, motorcycle crashes accounted for more than 15% of traffic-related deaths in the state last year. Riders are particularly vulnerable on roadways such as highways and bridges, where higher speeds increase the likelihood of serious outcomes.
As we continue to see motorcycle accidents across the state, it’s important to understand how riders are affected. Below are several common injuries frequently seen in these incidents:
- Road Rash: Abrasions that occur when the skin scrapes against the pavement during a fall are more than just surface wounds. Severe road rash can lead to long-term nerve damage, infection, and disfigurement, especially if protective gear isn’t worn.
- Fractures and Broken Bones: Arms, legs, and ribs often absorb the force of a crash. These injuries can limit mobility and often require surgery or prolonged physical therapy, impacting a person’s ability to work or carry out daily activities.
- Spinal Cord Injuries: Motorcycle crashes often result in serious spinal injuries. These can lead to lifelong effects, including partial or full paralysis, depending on where the spine is damaged and how quickly the rider receives treatment.
- Head and Brain Trauma: Even when helmets are worn, riders can suffer concussions or more serious brain injuries. These injuries may lead to cognitive impairment, memory loss, or even permanent disability.
- Internal Injuries: Not all trauma is visible. Damage to internal organs or internal bleeding may not show symptoms immediately but can be life-threatening if not addressed quickly.
