Greenwood, DE (May 19, 2025) – A deadly two-vehicle crash rocked the Greenwood area late Friday afternoon, May 16, taking the life of a 77-year-old man from Pennsylvania and injuring several others.
The crash took place on May 16, 2025, at around 4:59 p.m. Authorities say a black Toyota Prius was heading south on Staytonville Road and approaching the intersection with Shawnee Road. As the Prius continued through the intersection, it moved directly into the path of a blue Nissan Sentra that was traveling west on Shawnee Road. The Nissan collided with the driver’s side of the Prius, causing extensive damage and prompting a significant emergency response. First responders arrived quickly and provided medical attention at the scene before transporting all victims to local hospitals.
Tragically, the driver of the Prius, identified as 77-year-old Michael Boros of East Fallowfield, Pennsylvania, died shortly after being transported. The occupants of the Nissan, a 37-year-old male driver, a 26-year-old female passenger, and a 5-year-old boy, all from Bear, Delaware, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities are continuing to investigate the events leading up to the crash. At this time, no charges have been filed.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased victim. We also hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
Car Accidents in Delaware
Car crashes in Delaware continue to affect thousands of families every year. In 2023, the Delaware Department of Transportation recorded more than 28,000 traffic collisions across the state, resulting in over 8,200 injuries and nearly 160 fatalities. Even with safety measures in place, intersections remain common sites for collisions due to driver error or failure to yield.
Understanding how crashes impact victims can help shed light on the importance of recovery resources. Here are some major concerns facing victims after serious accidents:
- Intersection Accidents: Intersections are among the most dangerous parts of any roadway. Drivers may misjudge speed, fail to stop, or disregard right-of-way rules. These mistakes can lead to side-impact crashes, which are particularly dangerous due to limited protection on the sides of vehicles. Even low-speed accidents in these areas can result in major trauma.
- Elderly Drivers and Increased Risk: Older drivers often face challenges such as slower reaction times, vision or hearing issues, and medical conditions that make driving more hazardous. In this crash, the driver who died was 77 years old. These factors can play a significant role in intersection-related collisions and are important for families to consider when discussing driving safety with aging loved ones.
- Children in Car Accidents: When children are involved in crashes, even seemingly minor injuries can be serious. Pediatric patients must be carefully assessed, and accidents involving children can have lasting psychological impacts beyond physical trauma. In this case, a 5-year-old was involved and taken to the hospital.
- Medical Costs and Insurance Delays: Even when injuries are considered minor, hospital visits, imaging tests, and follow-up care can add up quickly. Many accident victims also face delays in receiving coverage from insurers, leading to financial strain at a time when recovery should be the main focus.
