Smyrna, DE (May 8, 2025) – A serious crash occurred early Thursday morning in northern Smyrna, leaving one person critically injured. The incident took place just before 4:40 a.m. on Route 13 near the city limits.
According to officials, emergency crews responded to the scene following reports of a motor vehicle collision with possible entrapment. Upon arrival, first responders determined that although the patient had sustained serious injuries, they were not trapped inside the vehicle. Paramedics provided immediate medical attention and began stabilization efforts.
As rescue personnel secured the scene, Delaware State Police Aviation’s Trooper 4, already en route, was alerted that its onboard whole blood supply and transport services would be needed. The helicopter landed near the crash site, and with the assistance of a New Castle County paramedic, the injured individual was airlifted to Christiana Hospital. The patient was listed in critical condition at the time of transport.
The crash prompted road closures in both directions on Route 13, and traffic delays were reported throughout the morning. Fire crews assisted with vehicle stabilization and debris removal, while police worked to investigate the circumstances of the collision. Authorities have not yet released the cause of the crash, and no other injuries were reported.
Our thoughts are with the injured individual during their recovery.
Injury Car Accidents in Smyrna
Smyrna, like many communities in Delaware, has seen its share of serious traffic accidents resulting in injuries. According to data from the Delaware State Police and the Office of Highway Safety, there were over 1,500 injury-related crashes in New Castle County in 2023, with a significant portion occurring along high-traffic corridors such as Rte 13 and Rte 1. Early morning and late evening hours are particularly dangerous, often due to reduced visibility and driver fatigue. While Smyrna itself is a smaller town, its location near major transportation routes makes it susceptible to both local and through-traffic incidents.
For those injured in vehicle collisions, pursuing a personal injury claim can be crucial to covering medical bills, lost wages, and other damages. Delaware follows a comparative negligence rule, meaning that an injured person can still recover compensation even if they are partially at fault, as long as their fault does not exceed 50%. Victims should act quickly, as Delaware imposes a two-year statute of limitations on personal injury claims.
