Researchers study traumatic brain injuries in children

An unanticipated accident can be a severely traumatizing event, especially if children are involved. When a child or teenager is injured due to someone else's negligence, families can find answers and legal advice from a Delaware personal injury attorney.

The injuries caused by accidents can range from bumps and bruises to spinal cord injuries or traumatic brain injury. With brain injuries in particular, scientists are still working on mapping out all the potential effects. Given how these types of injuries affect both mind and body, the number of possible effects is high.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of children and preteens visit emergency rooms due to traumatic brain injury. This type of injury can result from sudden brain trauma, such as the type experienced in a car accident, or a sports-related incident. The long-term effects of such harm include having trouble in both reasoning as well as emotions. Difficulty in sensations and language can also result.

Researchers have been studying the long-term effects of TBI in children for years. Recently, a study was shared that indicated that problems with attention is one of the likely effects of TBI in children. Children who have experienced severe TBI are several times more likely to also experience secondary ADHD. Still, many children who have suffered TBI do not experience attention deficits. Other long-term problems that may be felt by children who've had TBI include problems with inhibition and processing information.

Recovering from an accident is almost always an uphill battle. For a child, the path to recovery can be quite long. Obtaining compensation for injuries caused by negligence can be a lifeline for families struggling to help their child get better.
