Did your child suffer a head injury in a car accident?

As parents, we want the very best for our children, and we will do everything possible to prevent them from being put in harm’s way. Unfortunately, though, keeping our children out of harm’s way is not always possible.

Each year, countless children are injured in car accidents caused by negligent drivers, and there is nothing that their parents could have done to stop it. In some cases, children are able to fully recover from the injuries that they suffer. But in other cases, the injuries lead to irreversible damage.

This is often the case for children who suffer traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in car accidents. A child may go from being a smart, fun-loving, active kid to having physical and mental disabilities that will stay with the child for life.

Because the brain is so complex, doctors aren’t always able to tell exactly how a TBI will effect a child in the weeks, months and years to come. And researchers are only now beginning to understand more about the far-reaching affects brain injuries can have.

For example, new research has indicated that children who have suffered traumatic brain injuries get worse sleep on average and are more tired during the day than children without these injuries.

Additionally, the researchers found that children with a TBI also had impaired emotional, physical and social functioning compared to children without the injuries.

Ultimately, while parents aren’t always able to prevent their child from being involved in an accident, they can stand up for them after the fact by making sure that their child gets the treatment and assistance that they need.
